This Thursday, we have a Culminating Exhibition marking the end of Brooke Holm’s @brookeholm residency at Roger's Art Loft which will exhibit works created during the residency period in Las Vegas.
The exhibition will showcase a combination of large-scale aerial photographs, video projection, and a soundscape composed with synthesizers and field recordings from the landscape of the desert surrounding Las Vegas. Deserts are of particular interest to Holm’s, for the way they harbor and sustain life despite environmental extremes, for the way they embody and challenge the concept of time, and for the way they resemble other terrestrial planets in our solar system.
In Brooke’s work, she observes the celestial and anatomical body of the Earth by creating detailed environmental portraits of its elemental features. She focuses on the physical body of the Earth, often treated by humankind as we treat any body, with opposing practices of reverence and exploitation. Through these microcosmic studies, it becomes evident that everything is intrinsically connected, “Nature” being an all-encompassing organism to which Humans are deeply entwined. By elevating the voice of the Earth through sound, situated alongside the visuals, we transcend beyond conventional encounters into those of greater sensorial involvement by the viewer.
Visitors are welcome to walk through the interior space to view the photographs on display, and to take a seat outside in front of the large video projection to immerse themselves into a meditative aerial survey and accompanying soundscape of the world that surrounds us.

Come join us in Artist-In-Residence Brooke Holm’s @brookeholm workshop as we gather to look at ways of seeing, and ways of hearing when encountering the environments that surround us! The group of attendees will begin at the Rogers Studio Gallery for a quick presentation on Holm’s usual research process, to spark inspiration together; Discussion of ideas about landscape, photography, sound, the abstract, the macro and micro, light and shadow, and how these can relate to our immediate environments will be encouraged. Following the discussion, the community members will go on a silent walk around the neighborhood together. We will capture, with our phones or cameras, photographs and sounds of the details we notice when paying acute attention.
Community members are encouraged to share their findings with the Artist if they wish, so Holm can create a collaborative research collage that will be exhibited at the Culminating Event.

Rogers Studio Gallery hosted a vigil to support the community following the recent violence in Colorado.
“We wanted to create and hold a safe space during a time of deep distress,” said Rogers Art Loft Director Lance Smith @lancesmithart . “It’s a pandemic of increasing violence towards the LGBTQIA community, and we must come together, or else we remain targets.”
The vigil included opportunities to talk, pray, cry, laugh, and reflect. Attendees received care packages courtesy of generous partners, including The Rogers Foundation, Alios, PublicUs, Alternate Reality Comic, UNLV Fine Art, and NuWu Gallery.
Join us at the Rogers Studio Gallery for an engaging Artist Talk with Brooke Holm @brookeholm as she shares more on her work and experiences!

Artist Bio:
Brooke Holm is an Australian-American artist working in the medium of photography. In her youth, Holm connected with photography as a means to observe the natural world she encountered while traveling cross continentally between parents. These encounters sparked her deep appreciation for Earth’s landscapes and her subsequent investigations into the tension and bond between humans and nature. Searching for unconventional ways in which to portray the world, she took to the skies to photograph landscapes from helicopters and planes. By disrupting the scale at which we typically consume the natural world, she aims to inspire new perspectives and holistic views of our home. Holm has participated in solo and group shows worldwide, has self-published a book Sand Sea and was invited to photograph at various NASA facilities in the US. She attended The Arctic Circle expeditionary residency in the high Arctic and a studio residency at MASS MoCA. Holm is currently based in New York where she continues to exhibit her work, pursue research, projects and residencies to further examine the complex relationship between humans and the environment.

This Thursday, we have a culminating exhibition marking the end of Alexandra Carter’s @alexandracarterstudio residency at Roger's Art Loft. This exhibit will be of new work, including figurative paintings on drafting film and smaller works made with cranberry juice on linen; images from her archive will also be displayed. Her compositions investigate ideas of the monstrous feminine, motherhood, and taboos of sexuality. Her imagery is heavily influenced by performance movements such as dance, butoh, and burlesque. She welcomes discussion around her new research and her fluid, immersive painting style, especially inviting commentary in light of Las Vegas’ performative and visual culture.
More to be announced as there will be live burlesque performances offering further commentary and engagement with Alexandra's paintings and research.

We are excited to announce that Alexandra Carter @alexandracarterstudio will meet and talk about her figurative paintings and the heavily-researched, whole body process of making them. Her work is rooted in her upbringing on a New England cranberry farm, and explores how the language of agricultural fertility can speak about the female body. Her figures have a sense of movement, instigated by using her own body as her model and grounded by her interest in the performative imagery. She plans to further research the performative body, bodies on display, and how this shows up in Vegas culture.
